Among products from nano-engineering processes are quantum dot lasers, NanoOpto's polarizers, splitters, and waveplates. Another promising nanofabrication technique is focused ion beam (FIB) etching. FIB is a new method for fabrication of single-mode semiconductor and surface-emitting lasers. While most conventional single-mode lasers depend on distributed feedback (DFB) and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) designs, alternative designs based on coupled cavity effects within two-section lasers have been studied. Stability and performance of such single-mode devices require cautious control over the air gap between the two cavity sections. Scientists at Bellcore have shown that FIB etching for development of FabryPerot lasers was possible, but the lasers showed low output power, Recent steps forward in FIB technology and commercial availability of precision dual-beam electron microscope/FIB instruments now permit better process control and extend the technology to new applications. The modern FIB is a highly flexible processing tool that can be applied to any target material at any angle, shape, and size. The FIB process is therefore similar to a nanomilling machine. Among topics covered in some detail are FIB-enabled single-mode lasers, FIB surface-emitting lasers, device reliability, and nanofabrication as a technology platform.
