Cell phones are becoming more vulnerable to spam and other unwanted messages. Wireless carriers and traditional security firms are increasing their efforts to strengthen the abilities of multipurpose cell phones and smart phones to ward of hackers. Mobile spam is becoming more common. The threat has been emphasized by scams known as 'SMishing' in which spanners use text messages to trick phone users into providing personal information. These messages can be used to put a virus or worm on the user's phone as well. Other scams include intrusions that download mobile spyware onto a phone and allow hackers to listen to conversations. Mobile phone viruses are still rare, and security firms are offering new technology that provides users with added protection. The products are in their early stages of development, however, and are available for only specific cell phones and devices. Symantec introduced a new version of its mobile antivirus software for those devices that run the Windows Mobile operating system, for example. McAfee Inc. has expanded the availability of its mobile security offerings. Its products can block text messages believed to be malicious, and it can detect and eliminate any potentially infected file before they are run. These products are now available for a wider selection of mobile devices than in the past.
