JPMorgan uses the Eclipse development platform to create an application for market data and analysis. Developers at the company chose Eclipse for its Rich Client Platform (RCP) technology, which allows the international financial company to build its internal development system, OneBench. OneBench is a deployment platform for RCP-based applications. It provides an alternative to a user desktop for deploying the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) to run business applications. OneBench is essentially a user's workbench, while Eclipse is a programmer's workbench, says Bruce Skingle, engineer with JPMorgan's Investment Bank Technology group. Skingle says JPMorgan chose Eclipse's RCP over the Java Swing GUI components because of its inherent plug-in nature. Additionally, many of the company's developers were already familiar with Eclipse, having selected it as their chief IDE. RCP provides JPMorgan with what it needs in an environment that encourages reuse through the plug-in architecture. It also helps in reducing development and maintenance costs. Eclipse RCP is designed as an open-source tools platform based on various components or plug-ins, according to the Eclipse Foundation. The product includes Eclipse Runtime, the Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT), the Jface user interface framework, the Eclipse Workbench, and XML support.
