XenEnterprise 3.0 from XenSource is a user-friendly and manageable virtualization solution designed to boost server utilization and manageability. Using the products Java-based console, it is easy to manipulate several servers from one location. Once installed, the product takes over the machine on which it runs. This lessens the burden related to host system. The initial version can limitedly create guest instances running Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4.1. Conversion of RHEL instances and Novells (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) SLES 9 Service Pack 2 into Xen virtual machines is also possible. The products pricing is based on the number of physical servers, number of sockets per server and subscription type. Xen does not virtualize the pre-boot environment. To run, Xen instances need a modified kernel which is provided by XenSource. A tool for performing installations is Debian GNU/Linux. The products installation path for SLES 9 needs the physical-to-virtual conversion tool. The good thing is that once a Xen virtual machine has been installed, it can be cloned quickly from within the administration console. Expected enhancements of the product include the ability to handle temporary Linux installations and Windows and Sun Microsystems Solaris support. XenEnterprise 3.0s console ran smoothly on both Windows and Linux. It also offered usage figures on CPU, disk, network and RAM on host and guest machines.
