Salesforce.com's Apex 1.0 is a new Java-based application development language and platform to be announced soon. Apex is meant to build an ecosystem comprising millions of developers who use Apex to build many types of SAAS (software as a service)-based applications all revolving around Salesforce.com. On the Salesforce.com menu for developers a new function for writing code will be provided, and developers can use either Salesforce.com's integrated development environment (IDE) to write code or standard Eclipse from the Eclipse Foundation with a plug-in. Salesforce.com also presently offers a development environment as part of its AppExchange platform that includes Java-based development tools. With Apex, however, some characteristics of AppExchange customization abilities are expanded, and Apex becomes the development platform for the user, while AppExchange becomes the Salesforce.com marketplace it is meant to be. Included as services are database, application server, Web server, development tools, and Java-based development code used internally at Salesforce.com that is now open to outside developers. A new application programming interface (API) permits outbound message delivery to other service-based applications, and users can create custom buttons. A new workflow engine is provided, along with the ability to package any object as Apex code and publish to AppExchange. Applications written in Apex are automatically upgradeable, and multi-tenant code is supported.
