The Music Genome Project conceived by Tim Westergren means to analyze the structure of a song to allow identification of similar songs that a searcher might enjoy. Westergren's company, Savage Beast, initiated the project, which took five years and required the skills and expertise 30 experts in music to build a useful database. Each song had to be heard individually, and as many as 400 musical attributes were manually evaluated. The process required between 20 and 30 minutes for each song, and as of May 2006, the library contains more than 400,000 analyzed songs from more than 20,000 contemporary artists. Music Genome Project is a commercial effort, and the participants are trying to leverage the economic concept known as The Long Tail. The concept hypothesizes an environment with unlimited selected and low-cost, straightforward distribution. Money is made by surpassing blockbuster hits to identify obscure gems that might otherwise be lost. When a song has been identified, listeners are sent to amazon.com and other sites to buy. The online interface is called Pandora Radio, and Savage Beast is now Pandora Media. Some reviewers appear to believe that Pandora is best for increasing exposure to a specific genome instead of widening overall musical exposure.
