A group of companies has decided to develop a realistic way to unify grid computing technologies. Since a proposal to develop and manage grid technologies for users, operators, and developers using Eclipse was announced, interest in linking the effort with the Target Management project has grown. This is a subproject of the Wind River Systems Device Software Development Platform. Early comments on the g-Eclipse project raised questions about the utility of previous work on node communications done in the Target Management project. Other developments in the area include agreement among participants in the project to attend a conference in Geneva in the fall of 2006 to strengthen their collaboration with the Enabling Grids for E-SciencE (EGEE) project. The so-called g-Eclipse project will begin with support for gLite/LCG, lightweight middleware being used at the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid in Geneva. The LCG is promoted as the largest computing grid in the work. It is funded by the European Union as part of the EGEE project. Using the Eclipse framework and tools approach, the proposal also suggests that g-Eclipse could be extensible to support Unicore, GT4, and other grid computing protocols currently in use. A timeline for the project has tentatively called for basic implementation of an integrated grid computing environment and first implementation of plug-ins for the gLite middleware at the end of 2006.
