Finite element analysis (FEA) software is used to simulate the conditions in which mechanical systems will operate in order to determine their failure points. George Laird, chief technologist at Predictive Engineering, an FEA consulting service, used FEA to evaluate the design of a private customer's underwater craft. He received the CAD model of the vessel, which had a design that deviated from the standard American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) code. This made certification of its safety a special challenge for Laird's firm. The method of evaluation involved studying the effects of the factors like out-of-roundness in parts of the hull and yield strength. Laird established the test parameters using Femap from UGS to import a 3D model. In another example of FEA, engineers at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Arizona evaluated alternative designs and installation procedures applied to the regular maintenance and upgrades of mechanical elements and assemblies at the station. Abaqus FEA software was used to analyze the nonlinear contact behavior between surfaces. The software also solved multi-step problems and allowed properties to be modified as the analysis progressed. Simulations using FEA can speed up design, lower material costs, and maintain safety in regard to a growing list of applications. Even the United States Food and Drug Administration is using engineering simulations to minimize its testing on animals.
