Ruby on Rails provides a framework for the development of Web applications. It uses the object-oriented Ruby language and a model-view-controller pattern. This keeps the application's functionalities separate yet allows them to work together in an integrated fashion. Some developers prefer this approach to building Web applications over PHP, which puts all functionality together into a single file. Ruby on Rails also includes integrated AJAX support. RadRails is a free open source environment for the Ruby on Rails framework. The goal of the RadRails Open Source Project is to give developers using Ruby on Rails everything they need to develop, manage, test, and deploy their applications. RadRails 0.7 succeeds in meeting many of those goals. The conventional type of coding for Ruby on Rails forces developers to switch from the editor to the console to a Web browser and from editing one file to editing another file. RadRails moves most of this activity into a single, tabbed IDE. There are a number of competing IDE products, both commercial and free, that are favored by some developers. RadRails is an Eclipse RCP plug-in. There is a stand-alone version that includes the portions of Eclipse required. The main purpose of RadRails 0.7 is to integrate Rails development, and it succeeds in doing just that. The software's chief drawback is its minimal documentation, but the creators intend to remedy this weakness when RadRails 1.0 is released.
