Neverfail Group's Neverfail for Exchange 5.0, Quest Software's Quest Availability Manager for Exchange 2.0, Cemaphore Systems MailShadow 2.0, Lucid8's DigiVault 1.4.2, and SteelEye Technology's LifeKeeper for Exchange 5.3 are reviewed Microsoft Exchange disaster-proofers that use different approaches to mail server protection. All the reviewed solutions can handle just about all Exchange-related issues, with the exception of Internet failures, and they do so simply, at less cost, and with more added flexibility or protection as compared with the native Exchange cluster. Neverfail for Exchange and SteelEye LifeKeeper provide genuine fail-over for a whole Exchange server, and Cemaphore MailShadow and Quest Availability Manager guard individual mailboxes on one or more Exchange Servers. Lucid8 DigiVault provides backup of data stores for restoration to a secondary Exchange server. SteelEye edges out Neverfail for features, and Quest Availability is rated best for value. Quest Availability Suite for Exchange also includes Spotlight on Exchange. Prospective purchasers are advised to choose a product based on the percentage of accounts that have to be protected, the number of Exchange servers to be protected, the importance of avoiding a product that needs installation of an agent on the Exchange server, and whether or not database corruption is a major threat.
