Researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, believe that future semiconductors will consist of 'solution processed' nanocrystalline circuits. These solution-processed circuits would be painted directly onto the surface of electronic devices, eliminating the need for soldering fabricated circuits onto printed circuit boards. According to Ted Sargent, electrical engineering professor, solution-based, spray-on semiconductors would drastically reduce the cost associated with manufacturing electronic devices, including biomedical imaging systems and military night-vision systems. Organic semiconductors are 10 times more sensitive than the night-vision systems currently used by the military. They also offer better colors for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The organic solution employed by Professor Sargent's research group consists of semiconductor nanoparticles mixed with oleic acid. Glass substrates are then coated with the organic solution. Evaporation is accomplished by placing the glass substrates into a methanol bath for two hours. The final result is a smooth semiconductor film, measuring 800 nanometers in thickness, which consists of crystalline nanoparticles. This technology is especially well suited for photoconductive devices and applications.
