Testers found the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) Version 10.0 from Novell to be the most polished of all available Linux client operating systems. An especially impressive element involved the steps Novell took in revamping SLED's GNOME 2.12.2 desktop environment in order to ensure that users coming from Windows would be able to make a comfortable transition. For example, SLED's Start menu is similar to, but more functional than, the Start menu of Windows XP from Microsoft Corp. SLED defaults to a GNOME desktop environment. The only place where SLED did not overshadow Canonical's Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS, however, is in the area of software package availability. The package installation tools of SLED are tighter than OpenSUSE 10.1, but it provided too small a range of applications. While many distributions include the Thunderbird mail client from the Mozilla Foundation and the Kdissert mind-mapping software, SLED does not. Software package availability is critical for Linux distributions attempting to compete with Windows because Windows' software availability represents its most significant advantage over desktop rivals like SLED. The usability, security, and hardware support of SLED were all rated as excellent by testers, as was its documentation.
