Title: A Call to Open Up XAML

The XML Application Markup Language (XAML) is a .Net language designed for declarative application layout, but Bill Gates, the head of Microsoft Corp., notes that his company will focus on putting XAML everywhere. This means he envisions the kind of proliferation and dissemination enjoyed by the Adobe Flash player on both Windows and Mac desktop computers. The Microsoft focus gives rise to a battle between Adobe Systems and Microsoft, with each firm giving players away in order to sell development tools. Some industry experts suggest that a more interesting approach would be to open-source the Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere (WPF/E), which Microsoft designed to be a 'Flash killer,' support a Mono-based version, and make XAML an open standard. A fight between Adobe and Microsoft would ignore the real competition represented by Web 2.0 and the service infrastructure supporting it. Browsers that support HTML and JavasScript can do many things that were once considered impossible for it to handle, and the online environment is increasingly moving toward right Internet applications (RIAs). These are defined partly by declarative XAML languages like Adobe's MSML, Microsoft's XAML, Mozilla's XML User Interface language (XUL), and a number of other variations. Open XAML is the alternative to a 'balkanized' world in which browsers are everywhere but hindered by incompatible versions of HTML.
