Virtual servers represent a new tactic in the battle against sprawl. Over 50 percent of 420 information technology managers surveyed by CDW have started a service-optimization project, and 26 percent plan to use virtualization as the chief optimization technique. Provident Bank used VMware virtualization software on its Hewlett-Packard ProLiant servers to create several test environments. The organization saved approximately $70,000 in hardware and reduced its power requirements by 13,000 watts using this approach. Physical servers that were transformed to virtual environments freed up three-quarters of the bank's server rack space. Information technology (IT) director of operations at BatteriesPlus, Josh Moore, used a combination of blade servers and virtualization technology when implementing the firm's e-commerce initiative. Moore worked with CDW to deploy an IBM blade server and SAN storage platform, which was heavily reliant on virtualization using software from VMware. The virtualization approach also allows NewEnergy Associates, a software developer and consultant to the electric and gas industry, to decrease the size of its data center and reduce power consumption and cooling requirements. NewEnergy also used VMware virtualization software plus software from PlateSpin, to migrate from physical to virtual servers.
