High-performance images that use CCD technology are suitable for systems requiring the rapid collection of large amounts of data. Using these devices for geo-referenced airborne system means that the imagers must be mounted appropriately so they will show a high tolerance in all six degrees of freedom, says Kevin Kearney, chief technology officer of Geospatial Systems. The company's KCM-11 is a camera that features the KAI-1000 from Kodak and transfers two-and-a-half frames per second at 28 Mbytes via a gigabit Ethernet interface. The camera also has a Sensor Management unit that interfaces with an external, third-party inertial measurement unit (IMU) that includes a GPS receiver and a six-axis position sensor. The KCM-11 has a mount that was specially built to house the CCD so that is could be adjusted using interferometry-based alignment techniques, says Kearney. The construction of cameras for photogrammatric systems requires special attention to the choice of lenses. Bayonet-mount lenses are good for photographic applications, but they have not been developed for rugged use in environments with large temperature variations. These variations can change the focus of the lens during the camera's operation. Geospatial Systems built a custom lens that has no moving parts. It is bolted directly onto the CCD mount.
