Virtualization allows users to host multiple instances of server operating systems. They can also divide and control storage amounts on different disks from several large machines. The virtualization approach offers reduced operating costs and simplifies operations. Vendors say that virtualization can also apply to enterprise core and edge routing. The idea of virtual networking is not new. Virtual Local Area Network (LAN) technology has been used for some time to establish separate and secure LAN segments on a single Ethernet switch or across several switches. Vendors are now using virtualized routing features in core chassis switches to segment parts of an enterprise to provide more security and control of Internet and external network traffic. Vendors are working on new technologies to make virtual routing easier to set up. However, most enterprises are unlikely to use advanced virtual routing features. These types of features are designed for telecommunication companies and high-end enterprises with many customers or departments and a need to virtualize to scale. Virtualization is most attractive in the server and computing arena in which many individual servers are transformed into virtual machines run from a single large mainframe or multiprocessor machine. Some industry experts believe that adding an additional router to segment a network on physical machines is easier and more secure for large enterprises, however.
