SQL Anywhere 10, from the iAnywhere Solution unit of Sybase, is an excellent solution that took three years to develop and has expanded abilities in task areas ranging from handheld devices to complex enterprise applications. Developers will face a substantial learning curve in order to master performance choices that include pre-computed materialized views and multiple levels of snapshot isolation. However, the free developer license gives them all the room needed for exploration. SQL Anywhere 10 is a bundle of database foundations and tools that seems to be mostly a new product line rather than the usual update release. Included are the SQL Anywhere RDBMS, UltraLite database system for mobile devices, MobiLink and SQL Remote synchronization tool kits, and QAnywhere application-to-application messaging extensions for the MobiLink synchronization server and the SQL Anywhere Web services facility. Testers focused on the application development and database administration tasks of the internal IT builder. The primary portal into the SQL Anywhere 10 system is the visual Sybase Central Console, which has a plug-in architecture with many enhanced tools.
