LeapFrog Enterprises' Leapster educational game device is a big hit with some critics. The handheld video-game player features different educational titles that are targeted at specific grade levels, ranging from preschool and kindergarten through elementary school. It teaches children various academic skills while they are playing video games. For example, children of kindergarten age learn basic arithmetic functions, such as addition and subtraction, while they are playing a racing-car game. Correct answers translate into higher game scores, eventually leading to electronic game trophies. Other games for the kindergarten group teach such skills as color recognition, spelling, and combining letters to form words. In addition to the Leapster, LeapFrog manufactures a preschool activity center called the Learn-Around Playgrounds, which unfortunately had to be recalled in September 2006 because of a design defect in a plastic tube that caused at least 54 small children to receive 'minor scratches and bruises,' according to a company spokesperson. The company also manufactures the Fly Pentop Computer, which was recently awarded Toy of the Year. Despite the popularity of many of its products, LeapFrog has been experiencing economic difficulties. The company posted a quarterly loss in August 2006 of around $25.7 million. The previous year's financial report for the same fiscal quarter showed a loss of around $9.8 million.
