Video game technology, once only used for entertainment-related purposes, is now finding its way to library services. The proliferation of video games has been due to the availability of faster Internet connections, and innovative hardware products. A number of educational institutions are now applying gaming technology to their courses and libraries. Examples can be seen at the University of North Carolina, Indiana University, and at the Eastern University in Pennsylvania. Mark Puterbaugh began using the technology for Eastern Univesitys library in 1998. Puterbaughs Virtual Bibliographic Instruction (VBI) gives a 3D virtual tour of the library to students visiting the website. This has encouraged students to visit the library more often. Virtual libraries are especially attractive to people who learn more through visuals than through text. The technology also improves the experience of researchers and students who most likely will visit the library website instead of the actual library. The technology also helps simplify and enhance the features of libraries as visitors simply press arrow keys to move through the building, browse through bookshelves, or even ask assistance from a virtual librarian. Currently, only a few libraries have started incorporating gaming technology in their systems. The Alliance Library System, for instance, is using the Second Life platform to build its library system. Meanwhile, Puterbaughs virtual library is being improved to increase the number of users who can access the site at the same time.
