Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Linksys Linksys WRT54GX4, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) are highlighted in a discussion of cheap and easy ways to protect your wireless network.' First, the service set identifiers (SSIDs) have to be hidden so that they do not advertise the network. Next, encryption should be used to protect data from random surfers. MAC addresses can be filtered out so that the router knows who to allow in and who to keep out, and IP addresses should be kept limited so that hackers cant log on if there is no room. Free software is available for pinpointing intruders, and all PCs should have their own installed firewalls. The two encryption standards that can be used are the older WEP and the newer Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA). WEP might be enough because it is not likely that hackers and spies will spend lots of time and do lots of work to break the encryption. Encryption can be used to protect the network against hackers passing by and war drivers who want to make trouble. WPA is set up based on the router. Setup for the WRTFF54GX4 is described. The user also must set up encryption on each PC using the same key used in the router.
