Scientists on the cutting edge of quantum computing say that the near future could resemble science fiction. According to Stan Williams, research scientist at Hewlett-Packard, the real 'age of computing' has not yet begun. Today's computers are just toys and not much better than an abacus, says Williams. Traditional computing uses microscopic circuitry etched in silicon, and this approach can only take the industry so far. By 2015, Moore's Law, which dictates that the amount of computing power that can be placed into the same space will double every 18 months, will no longer be applicable. If the industry wants to stay on track after that date, researchers must find ways to utilize the quantum realm, an environment in which subatomic particles can be in two places at once. Some of the top research organizations and technology companies in the world are already investigating the potential of quantum computing. Freescale Semiconductor, a spin-off of Motorola, began to ship magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) in July 2006 in the first tangible showing of the quantum revolution. MRAM receives its speed from the giant magnetoresistive effect (GMR), which allows for the reversal in the spin of electrons. This can be used like a binary bit, with the directions labeled '0' or '1,' and used to store digital information. Researchers believe the potential for quantum computing is limitless.
