Electronic paper technology may finally be ready for prime time. E-paper depends on organic electronics and utilizes conductive materials, which contain very small balls of ink. These ink balls respond to electric charges and act like pixels on a computer's display screen. The balls can change in response to the charges. This process is referred to by the terms 'electrophoresis' and 'electrochromism.' While the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center pioneered e-paper technology, several companies have moved into the market, including E-Ink Corporation. Products are beginning to become available in the e-paper market as well. The Sony Reader e-book, which will be introduced in late 2006, is based on a display from E-Ink. It is a handheld device that can store hundreds of books in 64 MB of internal flash memory. Another reader, the ER 0100 iliad by iRex Technologies has 16 gray-scale levels, compared with Sony's eight levels, and offers resolution of 1024 by 768, compared to 800 by 600 in the Sony device. Applications for e-paper are moving beyond the e-book market as well. Industry analysts predict that there will be more applications in the areas of magnetic cards and signage. The largest application for flexible e-paper displays will be in magnetic cards, according to iSuppli Corp. These cards include financial payment cards, store club cards, and gift cards.
