Title: 'Tactical' Flashlights Emerge Into the Spotlight

Tactical flashlights have generally been used only by police or military personnel, but they are becoming more popular among regular consumers. The manufacturers of tactical lights are enhancing their sales pitches to ordinary people, who increasingly want the durable and bright-beamed lights even at their high prices. For example, SureFire sells lights to special-forces units, but it has focused its advertising budget on regular consumers to whom it sells 50 percent of its lights. The Aviator line of flashlights, which is popular with pilots who examine jets in the dark, is available in a regular consumer catalog. The growing popularity of tactical flashlights has been prompted by a fad for 'preparedness' that began after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Concerns about natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes have also prompted consumers to think about getting tactical lights. Tactical flashlights are expensive, with prices that range from about $60 to thousands of dollars, compared to regular flashlights that cost about $5 to $20. Tactical flashlights are very bright, but they are pocket-sized and made of heavy, industrial aluminum that can withstand explosions or being run over by a tank. The flashlights can be used to fight off attackers, according to experts in self-defense, who say the flashlights can be more effective than pepper spray.
