Sun Microsystems has entered the blade server market. The company has moved into the x86 server world with simultaneous ventures into space abandoned by rivals and dominated by competitors. The latest Opteron-based Galaxy servers, including a blade server and a system that can scale from four to 16 processors, were introduced in July 2006. The company also introduced a hybrid data server that combines traditional server and storage technologies. The Sun Blade 8000 Modular System is the firm's first move into the blade market since it pulled out the SPARC-based Sun Fire B1600 in 2005. The market for blade servers is among the fastest-growing in the server space. IDC predicts that market will reach $15 billion by 2009. IBM and Dell Computers had the stop spots in the market in 2006. The Sun Fire X4600 can scale from four to 16 processors and represents an entry to the x96 market for systems with eight or more processors, which has been abandoned by rival firms. The Tokyo Institute of Technology built TSUBAME, the seventh-most powerful computer in the world, using the X4600. Sun also introduced the dual-core Opteron-based Sun Fire 45000 archival storage server. It can hold up to 14 TB of data in 48 hot-swappable disk drives. All the new systems from Sun are totally unique in their performance and architecture and represent a new chapter in Sun's history.
