Commercial geographic information systems (GPSs) are common on military and civilian vessels as part of automatic piloting systems, remote navigational systems, and public transportation. This reliance on commercial GPS technology is growing, and with it the potential for damage to the units due to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Potential catastrophes could result due to the possible effects of EMI on commercial GPS units integrated into automated or critical systems. It is common knowledge that GPS is at risk of in-band frequency jamming or emissions, but it is unclear about commercial GPS susceptibility to out-of-band emissions, which can result in permanent damage or temporary failure. United States Navy (USN) investigations reveal several incidences of commercial GPS damage, particularly GPS antenna failure. Naval Sea Systems Command (NVASEA) began an investigation to determine if commercial GPS is at risk of exposure to USN shipboard radiated emissions. The investigation analyzed antenna gain, filtering, and power-handling capability. Findings reveal that some commercial GPS antennas are impacted by high power microwave radiated emissions. Findings also indicate that manufacturer specifications often do not reflect their GPS antenna's worst-case input power management capabilities.
