DreamWorks Animation SKG (DWA) credits Linux-based digital production, virtual collaboration, utility computing, and customized tools for its success in computer generated (CG) filmmaking. Technological challenges are a part of creating two animated films each year, and one of the biggest demands is need for performance. For its central production process, DWA depends on the open-source operating system, Linux. The firm now has over 1,000 high-end workstations, over 100 terabytes of high-performance storage, and a compute cluster of more than 5,000 CPUs. DWA also needs to have global communications 24/7. Virtual Studio Collaboration (VSC) provides a way to display data or images in numerous studio locales all at the same time. It is a boon for DWA because collaboration occurs without the fatigue or cost of travel. The technology is so successful that HP in Dec 2005 introduced a turbo version of VSC called HP Halo. Film production requires different technology demands. DWA depends on utility computing to access computing power on an as-needed basis for each individual project. The main benefit of connecting to an offsite HP data center is critical flexibility. DWA also utilizes various proprietary tools created for artists working on films to provide DWA's signature sophisticated imagery and storytelling.
