Wireless local area networks (LANs) are being incorporated into wired LANs thanks to new silicon hardware and advanced software. Unified networks offer a number of advantages, including easier deployment, lower ownership costs, and easier management. D-Link is leading the way by releasing a trio of unified LAN switches that will be able to process both 802.3 and 802.11 data packets, as well as support Layer 3 routing. All three models use Layer 2 routing and support the 802.1X authentication specification. One model has 48 ports; one model has 24 ports; and one model has 24 ports with Power over Ethernet capabilities. All three models will support wireless roaming, WPA2 standards, Wi-Fi Protected Access standards, and Wired Equivalent Privacy standards. The Ethernet switches are licensed in bundles of up to 10 companion access points per switch. The licenses can be optionally upgraded to 25 companion D-Link access points per switch. 802.3 and 802.11 data packets are currently handled at the access point. D-Link has stated, however, that future generations of its products will handle the data packets within the actual switches. Next-generation silicon will is expected to become the standard material for future LAN switches.
