Microsoft's 2007 Microsoft Office is set to become available in a beta 2 version with more features and fixes for many features that did not work well in beta 1. Microsoft has also described the eight packages that will comprise the new Office suite collaboration. They are Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, Communicator, InfoPath, OneNote, and Publisher. Office Groove is new to the suite and revolves around the concept of collaborative workspaces,' which are shared places where groups work on documents, have threaded discussions, share schedules, and track who's working on what tasks and when. Several upgraded products that are not included in any of the suite packages are being announced as Office applications. They include Microsoft Office Project, Office Visio, and Microsoft SharePoint Designer (a Web authoring application that replaces FrontPage and is for the experienced site designer). The product, according to Microsoft's literature, will include over 40 prebuilt SharePoint applications from the Microsoft Developer Network site. The most prominent change in Office is the one that will get plenty of comment: the interface, which will not use the drop-down file system with which Office users are familiar, but instead a Ribbon across the top of the window that gives access to all application features. Features are gathered into tabbed groupings. Eight 2007mx Office packages are described Enterprise, Ultimate, Professional Plus, Professional, Small Business, Standard, Home and Student, and Basic (which is available preloaded on PCS with only Word, Excel, and Outlook).
