Salesforce.com has acquired Sendia and is integrating that companys Workspace CRM technology with AppExchange, a vendor partnership program Salesforce put together in January 2006 for the development, sharing, and sales of applications utilizing a hosted service model. This new service, dubbed AppExchange Mobile, allows customers to wirelessly access AppExchange and Salesforce applications via various devices at a monthly charge. AppExchange Mobile currently support 60 applications, most of which are from small firms that serve niche markets such as the financial industry and supply chain software. Salesforces Web server stores 37,000 custom objects that allow developers to modify the applications. Salesforce has plans to bring mobile support for more applications in areas such as health care, financial planning, and real estate. To receive mobile access to software in the AppExchange program, users get an e-mail from their IT department containing a link that will launch the application, which is run on a hosted server. On the downside, Salesforce suffered a serious crash that caused its CRM server to go down for almost an entire day. Therefore, mobile device users must recognize how risky it can be if the application servers or other data sources they must connect to are not available. However, Salesforce allows AppExchange Mobile users to work in a disconnected mode.
