Telemedicine allows patients to consult with doctors regardless of where they are. Telemedicine bridges the distance between patients and medical professionals, but many obstacles have hindered the widespread use of the technology. The infrastructure required to transmit large images quickly does not exist in all locations, and some standards do not cover all the tools and techniques that would make telemedicine technology more common in general. The camera phone is being used by physicians, emergency responders, ultrasound technicians and other health professionals as a tool in telemedicine. Camera phones allow doctors and technicians to capture and send images to other health professionals for evaluation without the need for large, expensive imaging equipment. Most consumers own a cell phone. The Telecommunications Industry Association estimates that 66 percent of the people in the United States and over 77 percent of the people in Europe owned a cell phone in 2005. Camera phones became more commonly used than regular cell phones in 2006, and by 2010, 87 percent of all mobile phones are expected to be camera phones, according to a study by InfoTrends. Taking images with camera phones is just as easy as using a digital camera, and these images can be sent to other camera phone users so they can view the images on a computer or handheld device.
