MySpace is just one of a number of online social networking portals that especially appeal to young people. Others include Friendster, Facebook, and Xanga.com. However, MySpace is by far the most popular and successful with its emphasis on interactivity that includes streaming videos, music, e-mail, blogging, instant messaging, and compelling invitation management capabilities. All of this has translated to a number of marketing opportunities for people who want to tap into the 14-to-24-year-old demographic. Musical groups are using MySpace for self-promotion and in November 2005 the site inked a deal with Interscope to create MySpace Records, which will release albums from groups that have become popular on MySpace. MySpace is also looking at breaking into the satellite radio market. MySpace users can also easily search MySpace for music videos by keyword search or band name or they can simply browse all the videos. Users can also rank the photos of other MySpace members as well as rank teachers on fairness, homework, and lecturing style. MySpace makes it clear that users must be 14 or older to use the site, but there is nothing that can stop an 11-year-old from lying about her age and even claiming to be 25. Young people find MySpace addictive and can spend hours customizing their Web pages and adding pictures.
