Laptop computers present a serious security problem. While they are excellent productivity tools, they are also the most serious security threat to corporate and government networks. Their usefulness means they will be around for some time, so it is necessary to address the security issues. Laptops are vulnerable to theft and security breaches by hackers, sometimes using home DSL connections. Remote management software provides part of the answer, but few companies take adequate steps to protect the security of their employees' laptops. The costs of appropriate security measures can sometimes be prohibitive at small organizations. Additionally, the problem is compounded by the non-technologically educated work force at many companies. A laptop security system should include a personal firewall that automatically updates via the Internet; antivirus software that prohibits spyware that also automatically updates, an alternative browser like Firefox by Mozilla, a disabled guest account, and a user account with restricted permissions so users cannot save anything to or install any programs on the corporate network. Employees must be trained in using secure methods of remote logging in and protecting data. USB flash memory devices that hold confidential data could be supplied. These would be protected by passwords and also be encrypted.
