Affordable operating system (OS) Services Online, a company with about 300 servers that run Web sites throughout the globe, has to have zero failure rates and runs its data center on solar power. Affordable Internet Services, a company that reports a savings of $3,000 per month in the cost of electricity, as well as other companies, have begun using alternative energy sources to fight the rising cost of energy, which is a growing issue in data centers as costs increase. With their many servers producing heat and needing much power to operate, data centers require air conditioning to keep servers cool, and their energy bills are high. According to Advanced Micro Devices, for instance, some data centers might use more power than a small town. David Lear of Hewlett-Packard (HP) says the company has (from customers) over $5 billion in requests for proposals (RFP) that have a side related to social responsibility and environmental criteria. AMD has obtained market share that could have gone to Intel because AMD has more power-efficient chips, such as the Opteron. AMD will also announce more efficient chips for desktops, laptops, and servers later in 2006. AMD is among companies hoping that their attention to the power needs of customers will increase demand for their products and bolster their reputations as good corporate citizens. AMD, HP, Sun Microsystems, Dell, IBM, and Rackable, among other companies, have also founded the EPA-supported Green Grid, which is an industry consortium meant to reduce power consumption and cooling demand in data centers.
