The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will be held in Los Angeles during May 2006. The annual trade shows provides a forum for game developers to show off their new video games and hardware. Around 70,000 journalists, analysts, and industry professionals are expected to attend E3, which begins on May 8th. The video-game industry has been experiencing a slowdown in domestic sales since 2002, mainly due to high game development costs, a limited player market that is focused on young males, and a general lack of creativity. Much of this year's focus will be placed on the upcoming Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), which is slated to hit retail stores in early November 2006. Nintendo's new game console Wii, which is pronounced 'we', will also be on display. Both the PS3 and Wii will feature cutting-edge games with incredible graphics. The Sony PS3 will also feature a Blu-ray DVD player, which will allow users to view high-definition movies. The addition of a 'next-generation' DVD player is expected to push up the cost of ownership, but Sony might absorb some of the cost in order to compete with the Microsoft's Xbox 360. Although the Xbox 360 does not currently feature a high-definition DVD player, Microsoft is expected to add an external one to the console in the near future.
