Microsoft's wireless controller for the Xbox 360 looks almost like its corded counterpart. The only difference in outward appearance is the wireless controller's slight underside bulge from its snap-on battery pack. Two AA batteries power the wireless model. The front of the controller has a socket for plugging in an optional nickel-metal-hydride (NMH) battery pack or an optional charger. The back of the console contains a jack for plug-in headsets. There are four control buttons placed along the shoulders of the controller, along with two momentary switches. The top of the controller contains two dual-axis potentiometer joysticks made by Alps. Inside of the wireless controller is a single dual-layer printed-circuit board. There are two rumble motors: one that handles high-frequency vibrations and one that handles low-frequency vibrations. There are two main chips, which are both manufactured by National Semiconductor, including a wireless link transceiver and a wireless link baseband. The LMX4270C wireless link transceiver sits on top of a surface-mount module that acts as the radio interface. Controller memory is handled by a 512-byte E2PROM made by Atmel. All in all, the wireless controller is a good investment for Xbox gamers, especially the ones who do not enjoy tripping over cords.
