Microsoft is making major efforts to improve its reputation in the security arena, with its focus on protection and prevention with Internet Explorer 7, Vista, and NAP at the RSA Conference. Other forthcoming security offerings include ISA 2006 and Web filtering and antivirus products for the business sector. Observers will be taking a hard look at Vista and Longhorn Server, with Vista being the next Microsoft product that will be released that is taking a serious approach to security. The companys improvements in the realm of security can be attributed to several factors, including Microsofts ongoing fixes of Windows code. The release of Windows XP SP2 in 2004 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 have helped eliminate problems. Quicker actions from Microsofts security response center have also added to improvements in security as well as the abundance of new security features, patching services, and products, which include Windows Anti-Spyware, Windows Services Update Server, ISA 2004, and Microsoft Update. Security has also increasingly improved with the Linux kernel. Other analysts contend, however, that Microsoft needs to consider putting together a team to completely replace the Windows operating system beyond Vista and Longhorn since patches and fixes will only go so far in ensuring security credibility.
