Title: Palm's Treo 700w takes a better spin on Windows

The Treo 700w from Palm could provide the federal government with a powerful alternative to BlackBerry. The 700w Smartphone runs the Windows Mobile 5.0.2.0 operating system, avoiding many of the problems arising in PDAs that run Microsoft's Pocket PC. Palm's version of Windows is so different that testers realized they had never used the stylus pen during their entire testing period because they did not have any reason to do so. The Treo 700w has a QWERTY keyboard at the bottom of the unit, which helps with navigation. There is also a Windows key assigned to a standard function button, so users no longer need the stylus to select the program they want to run. They can simply push the Windows key and use the directional pad to launch a program that you select. The device responds very quickly to commands because it uses the Intel Xscale 312MHz processor. It comes with 128MB of nonvolatile memory, with 60 MB accessible to users for storage or to install applications. The screen on the Treo 700w is not quite as good as on other Treo models, however. Its screen resolution is only 240 by 240 pixels, scaled down to meet Windows standards. It can display 16-bit color, so it is relatively easy on the eyes. The unit is very small for a PDA with a backlit QWERTY keyboard, just 2.3 inches by 4.4 inches and just under 1 inch thick. It weighs 6.4 ounces. The tested unit came with Verizon as the cellular service provider. Verizon connects to the Treo 700w via a high-speed EVDO network for data transmission. If users are not in an area covered by EVDO, it defaults to the slower txRTT or IS95 network signal.
