eXtensible Markup Language (XML) databases are growing in importance due to the surge in XML data--and in Web services to access it. Native eXtensible Markup Language (XML) databases are expected by users to proliferate, but those products are being rivaled by those of conventional database vendors, including Microsoft and IBM. Moreover, Oracle and Sybase are also working to convince enterprise IT groups to use the next generation data stores, as well as data management and application development tools to create a new enterprise information architecture. The choice of an XML database is often part of a specific project, as is the case with Command Financial Press, a publisher of financial information that uses the Ixiasoft XML server to store and manage content for prospectuses for mutual fund clients. Because so much of the data is unique and much of it is also common to all client funds, XML adds efficiency, allowing the client to log onto an XML system through a secure Web site and to work with the documents in Microsoft Word 2003. The XML server stores all text as components that are assembled into finished documents upon request, and changes made are replicated through all related documents as required. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (Yukon) can store and process XML data without a requirement to convert it to relational rows and columns or store it as a binary large object. IBM is beta testing DB2 Viper, which will store traditional relational data and XML data natively. World Wide Web Consortium is creating a final recommendation for XQuery, which will create a standard query language for access to the processing of stored XML data.
