Two new companies have been formed with the purpose of providing child-safe social networking Web sites, where children can interact with each other without fear of attracting Internet predators. Industrious Kid, based in Emeryville, California, will launch Imbee.com, a Web site for young children between the ages of 8 and 14 years old. Jeanette Symons, a mother of two young children, came up with the idea for Industrious Kid as an alternative to MySpace.com. Although MySpace is supposed to restrict user access to individuals who are aged 14 and older, younger children often slip through the cracks. The other company, Thinkronize, offers young children access to its netTrekker Home Web site, which charges a set fee per month. Thinkronize also has a search engine geared specifically toward children. Known as netTrekker, the search engine was first only available at K-12 school districts nationwide. Beginning in January 2006, however, netTrekker became available for the general consumer market. Parents especially like the child-safe aspect of the netTrekker search engine. One parent recalls how his 8-year-old daughter was traumatized when she ran a search on Martin Luther King, Jr., the slain civil rights leader. Clicking on links obtained through Google's search engine, the young girl found herself visiting Web sites that were racist and vulgar. While both new Web sites are admirable in their intent to provide a safe haven for youngsters, it remains to be seen if they will be able to keep out adults masquerading as kids.
