Symantec's Veritas Enterprise Vault, Microsoft Exchange, and Accellion's Accellion Courier File Transfer Appliance are among products highlighted in a discussion of e-mail archiving software, caching appliances, and download services that can facilitate delivery of e-mail in a network environment where the size of individual messages and in-boxes balloon. Michael Osterman, founder of Osterman research, says as much as three quarters of the cost of e-mail system management is labor, so automation products can save considerable expense. He also notes that file-transfer protocol (FTP) use requires that users change their e-mail sending behavior, and FTP is hard to manage and will consume more IT work hours. For instance, market research company Millward Brown' spokesperson Kean Millward chose to install hardware to smooth out e-mail handling. The company was suffering Exchange server outages and had difficulty restoring quickly because of the size of user mailboxes. Quotas for the size of inboxes do not solve the problem, because productivity drops when users have to spend a lot of time management e-mail. Millward installed two Accellion Courier File Transfer Appliances in 2005 to handle attachments smoothly. Webcor Builders uses Veritas Enterprise Vault e-mail archiving software to prevent problems with server responsiveness, and spokesman Gregg Davis urges other users to have a realistic approach to mail server performance, especially growth management. ChemOne describes its use of ZipLip.
