Apple Computer Incorporated has required its customers to buy its own proprietary software for years. In 2006, however, the company began offering new software that allows users of its newest computers run Microsoft Corporation's Windows operating system as well as Macintosh software. Industry observers wonder if the move by Apple will encourage users of Windows-based PCs to switch to Macs. Analysts and investors are signaling that they believe this will be the case, since Apple's shares rose almost ten percent after it announced the Boot Camp software that will allow Macs to run Windows programs. The new Mac capability may not convince most businesses to switch a large number of their PCs to Macs, however. Apple only has about 2.3 percent of new PC shipments, worldwide, in 2005, according to International Data Corporation. The new Boot Camp software has been introduced during a resurgence experienced by Apple due to the enormous success of its iPod digital music player. The company created Boot Camp after users requested the capability, and the move does not alter Apple's operations, since the firm will not sell or support Windows on Apple machines. Additionally, Apple does not have to pay Microsoft since it is not licensing the software. Boot Camp emphasizes the strategic benefit to Apple's decision to use chips from Intel Corporation in its new line of Macs. These chips have long been employed in powering Windows-based PCs.
