Title: Gaming Platforms Drive Digital Reality

The requirements of game developers are beginning to closely match those of geospatial technology practitioners. The latest game platforms from Microsoft and Sony have the two companies squaring off on graphic-rendering specifications. Microsofts Xbox 360 can perform 33.6-billion-dot-product operations per second, while Sony claims that its PLAYSTATION 3 performs 51-billion-dot-product operations. The dot-product operation translates to the mathematical calculation to render vectors for an increasingly realistic environment. These statistics are just about twice as fast as some current high-end PC graphics cards. The latest devices and games can accommodate increasing numbers of controllers that make for a more interactive experience for large groups. The current crop of games being released on the latest PlayStation and Xbox platforms are known for their photorealistic objects and lifelike cityscapes. 3-D buildings and objects are modeled to the real world and then transformed to enhanced worlds by way of realistic weather effects and physics models. Creating facades with landscapes and textures with 3-D topography and vegetation can be thought of as the base map of such worlds. The geospatial community stands to gain when expectations of gamers begin to drive richer realities. However, the geospatial community should move ahead of the gaming industry for maintenance of market share in the current high-demand atmosphere for realism.
