Xen from XenSource offers an alternative to VMWare's ESX and Microsoft's Virtual Server. XenSource has completed its enterprise-ready product, Xen 3.0, with the support of all major firms in the industry, including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel. Xen 3.0 and other open-source products threaten to transform the core-virtualization stack into a commodity. All virtualization companies have started to focus their commercial efforts further up the stack at the same time. XenSource plans to bypass the core platform market and will attempt to obtain revenue from an advanced virtualization management platform, XenOptimizer. This offers advanced virtualization capabilities for the Linux data center. The engine of Xen 3.0 will provide core virtualization capabilities, while XenOptimizer will provide advanced services, such as physical-to-virtual conversion, drag-and-drop provisioning of virtual servers, and centralized monitoring of CPU and other resources via a dashboard. The larger vendors in the industry, including Microsoft and VMWare, also believe virtualization will become a commodity by the end of 2009. Companies that specialize in virtualization report that their customers are interested in Xen, but they want to see its commercial progress before they adopt it. Some industry observers believe it will take some time before core virtualization software is really commoditized.
