Sony Computer Entertainment America's PLAYSTATION 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Nintendo's Revolution are highlighted in a discussion of video game developers' expectations that industry leaders will, at the upcoming Game Developers Conference, engender inspiration and insight into the future of an industry coming to grips with slowing sales and rising costs. Thousands of game developers and professionals will attend the confab, which is held to promote the industry technologically, artistically, and financially. Will Wright will speak about the future of game design, and Phil Harrison of Sony will discuss the PLAYSTATION 3 console. Satoru Iwata will also speak. Sony recently announced a delay of about six months in the introduction of its eagerly awaited PLAYSTATION 3 console, but the delay occurs at a time when the development community is ramping up production of titles for new consoles, including the Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3, and Revolution. Xbox became available in 2005, and PLAYSTATION 3 and Revolution should be available later in 2006. Because of unknowns, said P. J. McNealy, analyst with American Technology research, interest level for the conference is high. Analyst Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter research also noted that the industry has to make its audience broader by finding new opportunities to attack the market and explore options of going beyond traditional hardcore gamers.
