At the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, scientists have developed a compact panoramic stereo imager with a wide baseline for production of accurate 3D images. A modified single-camera setup uses two hyperboloidal mirrors and one planar mirror that can be used for some robotics, virtual reality, and surveillance applications. Included are a 1/1.8-inch-image-size CCD (charge-coupled device) camera with 1200 horizontal scan lines and a 12mm-focal-length lens to capture the images obtained by two 80mm-diameter hyperboloidal mirrors separated by the baseline distance of 120mm. To produce a panoramic stereo image from upper and lower views of a scene, the relationship between a single imaged point in the scene and its projection onto the image plane is established by geometrical equations that include physical parameters of the hyperboloidal and plane mirrors and the focal length of the camera. A catadioptric stereo system can easily convert from the catadioptric omni-directional image to the panoramic image seen from one effective viewpoint. Equations can be used to find correspondence between a point on the virtual cylindrical image plane and its projection onto the planar image plane. The proposed system is accurate enough for various machine vision applications in which panoramic range measurements are important.
