Quest Softwares Quest Central 5.5 offers a robust set of tools that can aid database administrators in managing multiple tasks with a common workflow across heterogeneous database platforms. The product is available for Sybase, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM DB2 database management systems. The Spotlight performance diagnostics tool gives database administrators quick and easy ways to find performance problems in real time. The tool offers continual monitoring of different activities, including active sessions, memory usage, CPU usage, disk storage, and server processes for the database platform and the operating system. Spotlight displays its findings graphically, and the color and speed of the animations change to reflect database activities and alarms occurring when an activity has gone over a configured threshold. The powerful Performance Analysis tool allows for the monitoring of current and historical activity, and informs admins of the CPU, I/O, and lock and log wait times during slowdowns of the database. Another useful tool is Knowledge Xpert, which provides data such as how to perform various administrative tasks or the SQL command syntax. On the downside, optimized SQL statements are not always as intuitive as the originals, and some tools are not completely integrated into Quest Central. There could also be improvement in some of the error messages.
