A number of new techniques have been developed to make for an improved path toward video over wireless LAN (WLAN). These techniques focus on support for high-quality video applications with lower jitter, higher bandwidth, extended coverage, and reduced latency. Higher throughput is not the answer for every issue regarding WLAN video delivery, but it is a step in the right direction for a robust solution. Higher throughput gives improved immunity to interference, along with ways to handle degraded link conditions. Excess bandwidth can be traded for lower power consumption and extended reach. Multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO technology) is both a smart-antenna and signal-processing technique that allows for transmission of multiple data streams via multiple antennas. It achieves an extended range, higher rate, and improved spectral efficiency than with legacy wireless systems. Bandwidth increase can also be achieved for WLAN systems by using channel bonding, which takes its cue from Shannons capacity law that the theoretical capacity limit is linearly increased with bandwidth. Higher immunity from interference and higher bandwidth per user can also be attained by moving to the 5-GHz band, which provides over twenty 20-MHz channels in most parts of the world.
