Title: QCD weaves Linux admin into Windows

InterStructures from QCD Microsystems is designed to make the integration of Linux servers into a Windows environment easier by letting administrators manage the Linux-hosted network services via the Microsoft management consoles of Windows machines. Testers found the modules functioned as promised and permitted the performance of common management tasks for Samba, Apache, and other Linux services without going into what some have called the 'arcana' of the Linux command line. It is not possible to install and configure InterStructures products without dealing with Linux at all, however. The interfaces of the modules appear friendly to experts, but testers found them somewhat more difficult to use than the native Windows Server management approach. Companies that want to commit to Linux should devote some time to training administrators in native Linux techniques or hire administrators who have some experience with the operating system. Using the InterStructure modules, administrators do get the chance to place some of their load to the lower-cost Linux servers without needing to learn new techniques first. The InterStructures product line includes modules that allow the administration of Samba as an Active Directory member service, as a primary domain-controller in Windows NT style, or as a member service in a Samba primary domain controller (PDC). There are also modules for dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), Squid Proxy, and Apache Web servers.
