Texas Instruments Incorporated will acquire the Norwegian firm, Chipcon AS, a wireless chip specialist. Texas Instruments' acquisition of Chipcon is expected to raise the profile of ZigBee, a new technology standard, since it represents the first major acquisition of a maker of ZigBee chips by an established semiconductor manufacturer. It can be difficult for a new and promising technology to gain access to the mainstream because all benefits and performance must be validated with care. Timing is also important in terms of competing standards. Proponents of ZigBee recognize that the standard is not as recognizable as Bluetooth, but they like it that way. According to Bob Heile, chairman of the ZigBee Alliance, the Bluetooth standard was introduced with much fanfare and high expectations, and ZigBee learned from watching Bluetooth how not to promise too much for a standard before its time. ZigBee covers the technology associated with the IEEE 802.15.4 short-range wireless standard. The major selling point of ZigBee is the small amount or power consumed. For example, a home security system's wireless window sensor that is designed to detect break-ins could operate on one battery for years at a time. ZigBee can also function in mesh networks. Texas Instruments had been working on its own energy-conserving, short-range wireless technology, but the rapid movement in the market prompted the firm to buy Chipcon instead of continuing its in-house effort.
