Title: MacBook Pro Offers Promising Start to Era Of Intel-Powered Apple

Apple Computer's MacBook Pro laptop is better than the PowerBook and better than the HP Pavilion dv5000t, but has some negatives. For instance, the MacBook Pro is faster than earlier Apple laptops, but the speed is not as good As suggested by Apple's numbers. The PowerBook is replaced by the MacBook Pro, and both start at the same price, while the MacBook Pro costs more than the HP dv5000t. The three machines all have 15-inch-wide screen displays. Apple is using Intel chips to get more speed with less heat, and has recoded its operating system (OS) and built-in software to run on the new Intel processors. Some widely used Macintosh software from other companies, including the Mac versions of Microsoft Office, will not be recoded for some time, so Apple provides built-in invisible translation software that can slow performance. However, the MacBook Pro still seems to be more agile than the PowerBook. During speed testing, the MacBook Pro was faster than the PowerBook for importation of photos and music, burning CDs, opening multiple Web sites, and launching some applications. However, most speed increments were small--not anywhere close to the 400% speed increases claimed by Apple, and in some tests, the MacBook Pro was a bit slower than the PowerBook. Testers also found that, with the use of the Windows versions of Apple's iTunes music software, the HP dv5000t was faster than the MacBook at copying songs from a CD, but burned songs to a CD more slowly. Testers estimate that the MacBook's battery life could come close to four hours.
